By Essien Ndueso The recent election of an Akwa Ibom son, and a 300 level Law Student of the University of Uyo, Comrade Ini Ememobong as the President, National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has been described as a good omen to the University of Uyo community in particular, and the state in general. Speaking with our reporter in his office, the President of the Student Union Government of the University of Uyo, Comrade Samuel Asua while congratulating Comrd Ememobong on behalf of the students said he has made Akwa Ibom and Uniuyo proud by the feat. Comrade Asua who attended the just concluded 24th NANS Convention held between 10th and 14th December last year at the Women Development Centre, Abuja which produced Comrade Ini Emembong as the 24th National President of Nigerian Students worldwide, expressed the hope that he will use his good office to help ameliorate some of the problems plaguing the university; especially the accommodation problem being experienced by the students. "I want him to be focus in his office, and hope Uniuyo will benefit from the promised 50 rooms hostel facility during his tenure." The Uniuyo SUG President advised Comrade Ememobong to remain focussed as he pilots the affairs of Nigerian students and prayed God to see him through while in office. Comrade Asua credited Ememobong’s emergence as NANS President to the enabling environment which Governor Godswill Akpabio has created for the youths of the state to excel both at the state and national level, describing Akpabio as a youth-friendly Governor. The University of Uyo Student Union President recalled Akpabio’s university days when he emerged as Speaker of the University of Calabar Students Parliament noting that by his emergence as the NANS president which he won on a landslide, in a keenly contested election, Comrade Emeobong has placed the University of Uyo as number one in the comity of universities in Nigeria. Comrade Asua said he was proud to be a student of Uniuyo and wished the NANS president a successful and fruitful stay in office. It would be recalled that at the 24th convention of the National Association of Nigerian Students held from December 10- 15, 2009 at the Women Development Center, Abuja by the Accreditation officer and Assistant Secretary General of the Association, Com. Ajayi Tajudeeen Olarotimi, Comrade Ini Ememobong of the University of Uyo emerged victorious with 142 votes, while Comrade Haruna Kadiri University of Benin scored 20 votes and Comrade Jude Imagwe Univesity of Benin followed with 17 votes. After the election of the President, it was decided that elections into the other positions be shifted because of violence wrecked by those who lost the elections and their alleged untoward desperate moves. |
