Dear Prof. Jega & IGP Abba:

We, the Concerned Citizens of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria call on you to immediately remove or re-deploy the State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr Austin Okojie and the state Commissioner of Police (CP) Gabriel Achong for their complicity in the election malpractice during the Presidential election of Saturday, March 28, 2015 in Akwa Ibom State.

We are concerned that their presence in Akwa Ibom State shall not allow a hitch-free and fair gubernatorial and State House of Assembly elections on April 11, 2015. These two officials have been compromised and derelict in their duties by helping to commit electoral fraud in our state. We strongly believe that the continued presence of these men who aided and abetted the electoral malpractice during the presidential election on Saturday (March 28, 2015) will not bring about the actualization of the wishes of the people through ballot, and most importantly could result in loss of lives during the forthcoming elections.

Among the criminal activities committed by the duo on March 28, 2015 are:

  1. Use of policemen by local politicians and state government commissioners to arrest accredited political party election observers;
  2. Use of policemen by local politicians and state government commissioners to intimidate voters;
  3. Withholding of result sheets at polling centers and handing same over to corrupt politicians to manipulate election outcome;
  4. Giving voters cards to individuals to thumb print in broad day light with policemen keeping watch and enabling such criminal act.

These malpractices are contrary to INEC and, indeed, President Jonathan’s internationally acclaimed legacy of enabling a free and fair election to the Nigerian people. Clearly the politicians in Akwa Ibom State place their ambitions ahead of the lives and blood of Akwa Ibom State citizens, and they will stop at nothing to rig the outcome of elections as we just witnessed during the March 28 presidential and National Assembly elections in Akwa Ibom State.

Akwa Ibom citizens expect their votes to count and demand that government agents work in a corruption-free and fair manner in service of the citizens. The citizens of Akwa Ibom State earnestly demand immediate re-deployment or removal of the two officials in question.
